Microplastics

Microplastics are defined as being plastic particles of any kind measuring 5mm or less in length. They typically enter the environment when plastic waste breaks down and sheds these smaller particles. They are cause for concern due to their small size making them difficult to detect and remove, as well as the frequency in which they are consumed by both humans and animals.

Our particular focus is on tire wear particles, which enter the environment when tires are worn down when driving. Tire wear particles typically enter the environment through stormwater runoff on road surfaces, where they enter storm drains and are delivered into surrounding waterways. These particles have been known to leach heavy metals and toxic chemicals into waterways, which can be harmful to aquatic life as well as human health.
